He also said that Count Basie went to see him on three separate occasions in the early '70s, commenting to Sweet Pie that he was one of the only players of that generation with a distinct left-hand playing pattern. To wit: Though the phrase "fuck 'em if they can't take a joke" has been attributed to many people (including Bette Midler), Sweet Pie claims to have used it first, as the title of an anti-jingoistic anthem he penned. They're so outlandish that you really want to believe they actually happened. Winer makes other claims, too, many of which are unverifiable. He forfeited the monetary settlement he would have received from the government in exchange for a clean slate with the IRS, since he refused to pay taxes as protest during the Vietnam War. Six weeks after the case, he says, male strip clubs started opening. This includes a six-month federal case in Vermont, which, he says, involved the ACLU. Over the course of those years, he was, he claims, the defendant in 68 court cases. This translated to a nomadic nudist adulthood, in which he spent 25 years on the road living out of his van. It started when he decided that he would wear as little clothing as possible, making allowances for weather and social context. The eccentric self-taught musician, born Paul Winer, roamed the country from 1965 through 1990, performing at ski resorts, colleges, and tourist spots all along the East Coast while staying "as naked as the law would allow him to be." His music is equally unique, a distinct style called boogie-woogie, which is an upbeat blues form that paved the way for jump blues and artists like Jerry Lee Lewis and Leon Russell.Īs you might imagine, Winer says he was a rebellious, nonconformist child. The 67-year-old is, as far as anyone can tell, the world's only nudist boogie-woogie pianist. You don't have to be a highly experienced baker to follow these recipes.They don't come more original than Sweet Pie. It made me want to have a baking day with my family and host a get together to make new memories. It is aesthetically pleasing so even if you aren't planning on baking just browsing the stories and excerpts is enjoyable. It is not only good for it's purpose (recipes) but also for nice little stories. I really cannot think of anything bad to say about this book. There are nice, feel-good stories included with the recipes so you get more than just a recipe book. The photo's of the pies are gorgeous, as well as the other photos included in the book. As unexperienced as I am with pies, these allow me to be able to bake these beautiful and delicious treats. ![]() The recipes are laid out well with clear instructions. I have made only two of the recipes but they were AMAZING. ![]() I love this book! I will admit, when I bake it is usually cookies or cakes because I have always been intimidated by pies. I will undoubtedly make this pie again, and if I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would! The caramel sauce is quite possibly the best I've ever had, a delightful topping for many special treats, and the perfect compliment to the flavorful apple filling. The crust is a perfectly buttery and flaky. These recipes are well-written, easy to follow, and the results were divine. I've always loved to bake but shied away from pies because I found them intimidating. Update: I made the Caramel Apple Pie, which requires using four of the recipes from this book (the Classic Flaky Crust, Crumb Topping, Caramel Sauce, and the Pie recipe itself). Linda Hundt's collection of family stories and recipes is as cozy as a hand-knitted blanket and will surely become a treasured resource in my kitchen. There are three things I look for in a cookbook and this one has them all - beautiful pictures, engaging stories, and tasty, well-written recipes.
